Bread Bag Tutorial
I love retro and make things with 30's fabric. I know this red fabric isn't retro but it does match my kitchen. I did this Bread Bag a few years ago and now I use it to hold plastic bags so I thought it would be a fun project to revisit.
I love bread bags! and having a cute one on the counter is so fun. And a great gift idea too. I got the embroidery pattern off the Internet a while ago as a free pattern, so that's the one I used. My Dream Maker Husband Remember he's my stitcher. Any of "Aunt Martha's" patterns would be great!
I made this bag to fit a regular bag of bread. You may want to lengthen or shorten for the bread size of bread you make.
- 41 inches rick rack
- 1 yard drawstring
- 2 Skeins DMC floss (you pick color)
- Pellon 20 inches X 20 inches
- Red Fabric:
- 20 inches X 3 inches
- 20 inches X 7 1/4 inches
- Cream Fabric:
- 20 inches x 7 1/2 inches
- Green (inside and top edge)
- 20 inches X 20 inches
Hint: The seam is going to be in the back not on the side. That is why your picture will be in the center of the cream piece.
1. Cream fabric- cut 20 inches X 7 1/2 inches find the center of the fabric. Iron your favorite iron on in the center or using a lightbox trace your picture. On the back of the fabric iron the Pellon. This helps stabilize your fabric for your stitching and helps hide lines. Now using 2 strands of DMC floss embroider your picture. When done iron from the back to get rid of hoop or folding lines.
2. Sew the red fabric ( 20 X 7 1/4) to the bottom of the cream fabric. And the red fabric ( 20 X 3 ) to the top edge.
3. Iron seams to the red fabric.
4. Sew rick-rack at the seam on bottom and top of the cream fabric.
5. Sew green fabric to the top of your bag.
After sewn fold the very top edge to the bottom red edge. It will be back to back and you will have about 2 inches green showing at the top. Iron this at the fold. This will be your marking as to where the green goes to the inside and stays on the outside. Open up.
6. Now you should have it laying out with the top green, then red, then cream, and then red. Fold left to right with the wrong side showing up. Sew the side seam all the way down. From the seam, you just sewed find the center front at the bottom and top edges and mark with a pin. On the bottom (red fabric)Line up the back seam and the center front and sew across the bottom edge. For top edge repeat the instructions for bottom EXCEPT sew both sides and leave a gap in the center for turning. To make the bottom of the bag take the corner and match the side seam to the bottom seam and sew 1 1/2 inch across. do this at the top and bottom. Turn right side out and sew closed.

7. Using the ironed fold in the green, turn the green fabric into the bag and sew 3/4 inch down from the fold all the way around and repeat 1 inch down again. I sewed back and forth by the back seam. And in between then 2 stitch lines you just did unpick the back seam to thread your drawstring through.
8. Put a safety pin at the end of the drawstring and string it through.
9. Make your favorite loaf of bread
10. slide it into your new bag....when cool....and enjoy!
